Pollyanna Becomes patron of The Badger Trust

Pollyanna has become the first patron of a national charity which promotes the conservation, welfare and protection of badgers, their setts and habitats. The Badger Trust is the leading voice for badgers in Britain, and represents and supports the activity of 80 local voluntary badger groups.

Pollyanna is looking forward very much to working with the trust in her new role. The government has just announced a twelve week consultation period on the potential culling of badgers. The link between badgers and the spread of bovine TB has yet to be conclusively proven. Research has shown that almost 90% of badgers do not carry the disease, and there is new evidence to suggest that culling of badgers within infected areas may worsen the problem by spreading the disease into previously uncontaminated areas. To find out more about this research, and the work the trust is undertaking to conserve badgers, visit their web site at www.badger.org where you can also add your name to the online petition calling for the protection of badgers.

If you are concerned about these issues, and would like to support the Trusts campaign, you could become a supporter of The Badger Trust, and join your local group at their meetings and activities, write to DEFRA (visit www.defra.gov.uk) or your local MP (visit www.parliment.uk) or even contact your local radio station and take part in a phone in discussion.
